Background Information

Alexander the Great ROK Guide

Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great, was a king (basileus) of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and a member of the Argead dynasty. He was born in Pella in 356 BC and succeeded his father Philip II to the throne at the age of 20.

He spent most of his ruling years on an unprecedented military campaign through Asia and northeast Africa, and by the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to northwestern India. He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history’s most successful military commanders.

During his youth, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle until age 16. After Philip’s assassination in 336 BC, he succeeded his father to the throne and inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army. Alexander was awarded the generalship of Greece and used this authority to launch his father’s pan-Hellenic project to lead the Greeks in the conquest of Persia.

In 334 BC, he invaded the Achaemenid Empire (Persian Empire) and began a series of campaigns that lasted 10 years. Following the conquest of Anatolia, Alexander broke the power of Persia in a series of decisive battles, most notably the battles of Issus and Gaugamela.

He subsequently overthrew Persian King Darius III and conquered the Achaemenid Empire in its entirety. At that point, his empire stretched from the Adriatic Sea to the Indus River.

Alexander endeavoured to reach the “ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea” and invaded India in 326 BC, winning an important victory over the Pauravas at the Battle of the Hydaspes.

He eventually turned back at the demand of his homesick troops, dying in Babylon in 323 BC, the city that he planned to establish as his capital, without executing a series of planned campaigns that would have begun with an invasion of Arabia.

In the years following his death, a series of civil wars tore his empire apart, resulting in the establishment of several states ruled by the Diadochi: Alexander’s surviving generals and heirs.

Alexander’s legacy includes the cultural diffusion and syncretism which his conquests engendered, such as Greco-Buddhism. He founded some twenty cities that bore his name, most notably Alexandria in Egypt.

Alexander’s settlement of Greek colonists and the resulting spread of Greek culture in the east resulted in a new Hellenistic civilization, aspects of which were still evident in the traditions of the Byzantine Empire in the mid-15th century AD and the presence of Greek speakers in central and far eastern Anatolia until the 1920s.

Alexander became legendary as a classical hero in the mould of Achilles, and he features prominently in the history and mythic traditions of both Greek and non-Greek cultures.

He became the measure against which military leaders compared themselves, and military academies throughout the world still teach his tactics. He is often ranked among the most influential people in history.

Introduction

Welcome to our in-depth Rise of Kingdoms guide for Alexander The Great. This informative guide was created to help provide an overview of Alexander The Great skills, talent trees, gameplay, strategies, and guides in Rise of Kingdoms. The purpose of this overview guide is to help new and experienced players understand how to play Alexander The Great right and maximize strategic advantages.

Alexander The Great is one of the most powerful legendary commanders that becomes available in late game. He is unlockable once the kingdom turns 120 days old (just like Saladin and Genghis Khan) and specializes in the infantry army. Alexander The Great is widely known as one of the best hero in Ancient Greek who conquered and ruled a vast empire. Which makes sense given his high power and large troop capacity.

To summon Alexander The Great, you will need to get 10 Alexander The Great sculptures. Once you have the required materials, you can summon him via Commander selection tab. He is great for providing additional layers of protection during the defensive battles and to provide support to nearby friendly commanders.

Best Alexander The Great Skills

Alexander the Great has one of the most unique and diversified skill sets. Most of the commanders that you probably have played so far typically focus on dealing damage and reducing their combat effectiveness. But Alexander the Great plays very differently in Rise of Kingdoms. That’s because he serves the role as a powerful infantry commander and defender. Below is a list of the skills that Alexander the Great uses.

Alexander The Great ROK
Shield of the King
Alexander Shield of the King

Rage Requirement: 1000

Alexander the Great puts up a powerful shield for 4 seconds and at the same time puts up a second, smaller shield for the nearby friendly army with the lowest percentage of troops remaining for 2 seconds (Alexander’s own army cannot gain this shield).

Upgrade Preview:

Shield (Self): 600 / 700 / 800 / 1000 / 1200
Shield (Ally): 200 / 300 / 400 / 500 / 600

Shield of the King is an interesting active skill that grants 1,200 shield points. Which pretty much protects him from a single active skill damage. Furthermore, when Alexander the Great activates this skill, a nearby friendly commander gets the shield which really helps a lot with survivability.

Lead the Charge
Alexander Lead the Charge

When incoming damage would be reduced on the map, replace the damage reduction. Each normal attack against a 10% chance to deal extra damage as well as to reduce the target’s healing effects for 5 seconds.

Upgrade Preview:

Direct Damage Factor: 800 / 1000 / 1200 / 1400 / 1700
Healing Effect Reduction: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%

Lead the Charge works great when the incoming damage is reduced. For whatever that amount of damage is reduced becomes a “counter” damage to the target. Plus a 10% chance to deal 1,700 direct damage factors which is really strong. On the top of that, they get 30% healing debuff for 5 seconds.

Frontline Commander
Alexander Frontline Commander

Increases infantry unit’s march speed and attack while troops are on the map.

Upgrade Preview:

Infantry March Speed Bonus: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%
Infantry Attack Bonus: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%

Alexander The Great also moves around on the map fast and packs with a serious amount of firepower thanks to this passive skill. You definitely want to max out this passive skill to gain these awesome bonuses.

Battle of Chaeronea
Alexander Battle of Chaeronea

Attack is increased when the shield is down. When this shield is activated, the bonus changes to defense.

Upgrade Preview:

Attack Bonus: 20% / 25% / 30% / 35% / 40%
Defense Bonus:10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%

This passive skill adds an interesting twist to the game. When the shield is down, Alexander the Great deals 40% more damage. When the shield is up, he gains 30% defense bonus. This synergy well with his gameplay and skills.

Son of Amun
Alexander Son of Amun

Immediately put up a shield which can absorb a large amount of damage (Damage Factor 1200) for 4 seconds. At the same time, Alexander puts up a second, smaller shield for the nearby friendly army with the lowest percentage of troops remaining (Damage Factor 600) for 2 seconds, and increases the damage taken overtime by nearby enemies (up to 3 targets) by 30% for 4 seconds.

This is an enhanced skill which adds damage taken overtime by nearby enemies upwards to 3 targets by 30%. Which means they will take more damage when this active skill is cast. A nice bonus on top of the already strong offensive combat capabilities.

Best Commander Pairs

Alexander the Great is an amazing legendary commander, no doubt about that. But he lacks the ability to deal direct damage towards enemy targets with his active skill. Nor does he have the ability to clamp down on the enemy targets. Which is why we highly recommend pairing powerful nukers with him. Additionally, you can do debuffers to maximize the troops damage. Below are pairs that work the best with Alexander the Great.

Guan Yu

Guan Yu Rise of Kingdoms Guide

One of the best commanders to pair Alexander the Great with is Guan Yu. He is an incredibly strong offensive commander that will make a quick work out of your enemies. Though, he definitely does need a commander that can provide shield because he has a passive skill that interacts with the shield and gives increased damage.

This is where Alexander the Great comes into the play by providing support to Guan Yu and nearby friendly armies. Alexander the Great is already a strong commander on the field, so why not take advantage of his combat abilities with Guan Yu to transform them into a strong killing machine on the field?

Richard I

Rise of Kingdoms Richard I

If you are looking to pair Alexander the Great with another commander to further reduce incoming attacks. Then look no further because Richard I is an amazing commander that will make enemies’ big heavy attacks hit like a wet noodle. Alexander the Great already absorbs incoming attacks with his shields. So Richard I provides an additional layer of defense by healing injured troops and getting them back to the fighting state.

Since both are specialized in infantry troops, they will benefit from each other tremendously. When you are defending your city, Richard I can always use some helping hands from Alexander the Great — especially when it comes to absorbing incoming attacks while Richard I stops the attackers from breaking in your empire.

Mehmed II

Mehmed II ROK

Mehmed II takes the role as the primary commander, due to his skill set. This pair will expand the troop capacity, which means more infantry, more damage, and more defense — a clear win-win situation. For the best and optimal combat effectiveness, Mehmed II needs to roll with Pure Army talent build.

When you pair Alexander the Great with Mehmed II, you get the best of both worlds. Mehmed II is able to deal heavy blows and enriching skill damage which do play an important role in demolishing your enemy targets. Plus, his passive skills will benefit infantry a lot since Alexander is an infantry-focused commander.

If you do not have Mehmed II in your roster, roll with Osman I or Julius Caesar as they have similar skill sets.

Eulji Mundeok

Eulji Mundeok Commander

In this part, Eulji Mundeok takes the role as a primary commander when serving as the garrison commander. Mainly because he excels at providing an additional layer of protection and greatly hinders the enemy’s quest to conquer your city. The talent build that Eulji Mundeok has will greatly influence how Alexander the Great fights during the battle.

If you are doing Garrison talent build with Eulji Mundeok, Alexander the Great will be able to gain advantage of that and provide solid defense. In addition to that, both benefit each other thanks to the fact that they are infantry-specialization.

An alternative option to Eulji Mundeok is Sun Tzu who excels at dealing additional skill damage and provides bonuses to infantry.

Ishida Mitsunari

Best Ishida Mitsunari Commander

Let’s not forget the fact that Alexander the Great did provide protection for the gathering commanders. Ishida Mitsunari is an excellent secondary commander to pair with. He comes with an active skill which accelerates the speed of rage generation. An important component to maintaining high uptime on the shield.

And if you have him as secondary commander, then the damage of skill is increased by 15% which definitely helps a lot with Alexander the Great’s passive skill: Lead the Charge.

Alternatively, if you don’t have Ishida Mitsunari yet, then Cleopatra VII and Seondeok both are good picks. On the lower side, Boudica and Lohar are actually pretty good too.
